How to Buy Branded Clothing Stocklots: A Retailer's Guide

Branded stocklots let independent shops and online sellers stock well-known labels at a fraction of the usual wholesale price. The catch is that stocklot buying works differently from ordering a new season from a brand. This guide explains how it works, what to check before you buy, and how to place your first order with confidence.

What is a branded clothing stocklot?

A stocklot is a batch of goods that a brand, distributor or retailer needs to sell outside its normal channels. In fashion, this usually means:

  • Overstock: the brand produced more than it sold.
  • End-of-season stock: last season's collection, cleared to make room for the new one.
  • Cancelled orders: goods a retailer ordered but never took.
  • Showroom and sample stock: smaller quantities, often in sample sizes.

The products are new, authentic and usually still have their original labels. They are sold at a reduced price because the seller needs the space, the cash or a clean start, not because anything is wrong with them.

You will also hear the terms job lot, closeout and excess inventory. In practice they all describe the same idea: genuine branded goods sold off-price in larger quantities.

Why retailers buy stocklots

  • Better margins. Buying below regular wholesale leaves room for a healthy markup, even if you sell below the original retail price.
  • Recognised brands. Known labels sell faster than unbranded stock, especially online, where customers search by brand.
  • No season commitment. You buy what is available now, without pre-ordering a collection months ahead.
  • Variety. You can test a new brand or category with a smaller order before committing to more.

What to check before you buy

1. Authenticity. Only buy from suppliers who deal in genuine branded goods and can tell you where the stock comes from. Ask for clear product photos showing labels and tags. If a price looks too good to be true for a premium brand, be careful.

2. The size breakdown. This is the most common surprise for first-time buyers. Stocklots rarely have a perfect size curve; there may be plenty of M and L and very few XS. Always check the available quantity per size, and only order sizes your customers actually buy.

3. The season and style. End-of-season stock is ideal if you sell all year or online. If you run a seasonal shop, check whether the styles fit your next selling season, not just the current one.

4. The real cost per piece. Add delivery costs to the product price before you calculate your margin. A low unit price can look different once shipping is included, especially on small orders.

5. Delivery time. Stocklot goods often ship from a central warehouse, so plan around the delivery window rather than ordering at the last minute before a sales peak.

Five mistakes first-time buyers make

  1. Ordering by price, not by demand. A cheap item that does not suit your customers is not a bargain.
  2. Ignoring sizes. Buying a full style without checking the size spread leaves you with pieces you cannot sell.
  3. Buying too much of one thing. Start with a mix of styles and colours, then reorder what sells.
  4. Forgetting delivery costs. Always calculate the landed cost per piece.
  5. Waiting too long. Stocklots sell out and are rarely restocked. If something fits your shop, order while it is still available.
